Marigold: Launch keynote
Chapter 1The problem
Plover Goods · Launch
Your phone dies where the view is best.Phones die where the view is best.
The Plover Goods launch keynote.
This is the Plover Goods launch keynote for Marigold, a solar charger for people who spend their days outside. It starts with a problem every hiker knows: the phone dies exactly where the view is best. Over the next few minutes we show the product, how it works, what it costs and when you can get one.
But every hiker knows what happens when the battery quits first
The problem
Six in ten hikers lose their phone to a flat battery.Phones die on the trail.
A dead phone is a lost map, a lost photo and a long walk back. Power banks help, until they run flat too.
- Hikers who lost phone power
- 61%
- Survey of 2,000 day hikers, spring 2026
In our survey of 2,000 day hikers, 61% had lost phone power on a trip. A dead phone is a lost map, a lost photo and a long walk back. Power banks help, but only until they run flat too.
So we built a charger that runs on sunlight
Chapter 2Meet Marigold
Introducing
Meet Marigold, the charger that runs on sunlight.Meet Marigold.
A solar charger that folds to the size of a paperback and fills a phone in 90 minutes of sun.
Meet Marigold, the charger that runs on sunlight. It folds from four panels to the size of a paperback, and in 90 minutes of direct sun it fills a phone from empty. Everything else in this keynote explains how that works, what it costs and when you can have one.
And it takes three moves to use
How it works
Unfold. Aim. Forget it.Unfold. Aim. Forget it.
- 01UnfoldFour panels open flat in one motion
- 02AimA green light says the sun is right
- 03Forget itClip it to your pack and keep walking
Using Marigold takes three moves. Unfold it: four panels open flat in one motion. Aim it: a green light tells you when the sun is right. Then forget it: clip it to your pack and keep walking while it charges.
And here is what those three moves buy you
The numbers
Fast in the sun, ready in the shade, light enough to forget.Fast, stored, light.
- Minutes of direct sun to fill a phone
- 90
- Full phone charges stored for later
- 3
- Grams, folded flat
- 240
Three numbers carry the idea. In direct sun, 90 minutes takes a phone from empty to full. The built-in battery stores 3 full phone charges for the shade and the night. And folded, Marigold weighs 240 grams, light enough to forget it is in your pack.
But what about the power bank you already own?
Versus a power bank
Stop charging your charger.Don’t charge your charger.
A power bank
- Charged from a wall before every trip
- Dead weight the moment it runs out
- One more thing to remember
Marigold
- Charges itself wherever there is daylight
- Stores 3 full phone charges for the shade
- Weighs 240 g and folds flat
A power bank has to be charged from a wall before every trip, is dead weight once it runs out, and is one more thing to remember. Marigold charges itself wherever there is daylight, stores three full phone charges for the shade, and weighs 240 grams. Stop charging your charger.
And we asked 100 testers to try it first
Beta results
Nine in ten testers said they would buy it.Nine in ten would buy it.
We put Marigold in the packs of 100 beta testers and asked one question.
- 9090Would buy Marigold
- 1010Not yet
Each dot = 5 beta testers
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Would buy Marigold | 90 | 90 |
| Not yet | 10 | 10 |
We put Marigold in the packs of 100 beta testers and asked one question: would you buy it? 90 said yes, which is nine in ten. The dots show all 100 testers, one dot for every five, so each dot stands for five real people with a real hike behind them.
And one of them put it better than any chart
I hiked a whole weekend on one phone and never once checked the battery.
Imogen Pryce tested Marigold in the Scottish Highlands. In her words: I hiked a whole weekend on one phone and never once checked the battery. She is one of the 90 beta testers who said they would buy it, and she said it better than any chart could.
So here is when you can get one
